Volkswagen Group Inclusive Mobility

The Inclusive Mobility program is a social initiative from Volkswagen Group that helps design vehicles and services that improve transportation and the quality of life for everyone, especially people with disabilities. We focused specifically on products and services that promoted inclusion.

Project 1: First and last mile guidance for passengers with vision impairments

For mobility services that utilize autonomous vehicles, we identified that the first mile and last mile steps of the customer journey did not completely address the challenges that people with vision impairments face on a day-to-day basis with transportation services.

Today’s mobility services rely on the driver to cover this part of the UX journey.

We explored concepts around:

  1. Wayfinding

  2. Vehicle Identification

  3. On-boarding

  4. De-boarding

Project 2: Design requirements for passengers with vision impairments.

When passengers are onboard, we began to understand how we could enable ways for them to modify their ride. Some examples included:

  1. Stop in case of an emergency

  2. Speak to a service representative

  3. Unlock/Lock doors

We collaborated with the Lighthouse for the Blind, based out of San Francisco, CA to help us understand which design concepts would help users carry out the above actions quickly and safely.
